Nw. South America; C. w. South America; S. South America; Falkland Is.;
Fragmented n. population in n. Andes;
Three major populations: C. Andes; S. South America; Falkland Is.;
(1) Sw. Colombia (s. Cauca and Narino on Lagunas La Cocha and San Rafael) through Ecuador (Lagunas Cuicocha and Yaguarcocha), w. Peru (Lagunas Umayo and Lagunillas and Lake Junin), c. and sw. Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, Oruro, Potosi and Laguna Alalay), n. Chile s. to Antofagasta and nw. Argentina (Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca).
(2) Nc. Chile s. from n. Atacama to w. and s. Argentina s. from San Juan, Cordoba, Santa Fe, the Rio Negro and Neuquen to Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Is.
S. populations migrate in winter n. to c. Argentina.
