Kirghiz steppes n. to the Anadyr River, s. to the Kamchatka Pen., Amurland, Sakhalin Is. and ex. w. and n. China (w. Sinkiang, nw. Mongolia (Altai region) and n. Manchuria).
Winters from sw. Iceland to the coasts of Ireland, Scotland, England, n. France, Belgium, the Netherlands, n. Germany, Denmark, ex. w. Poland (Elbe Delta), s. Sweden and the North Sea coasts of n. to c. Norway, then locally in ne. Switzerland, Italy, the Adriatic coast of Yugoslavia, Albania, s. Russia (n. Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and the Aral Sea), n. Iran (s. Caspian Sea), Japan, s. Korea and s. China.
(2) Breeds from the Aleutian Is. and c. Alaska to Canada (n. Yukon, nw. and s. Mackenzie, s. Keewatin, n. Manitoba to e. and s. Ontario, s. Quebec (local)) s. to the nw. and nc. United States (ne. Washington, Oregon, w. Montana, nw. Wyoming, n. Utah, North Dakota, ne. South Dakota and n. Minnesota). Formerly bred s. to nw. Nebraska, ne. Iowa, n. Illinois, n. Indiana and s. New England.
Winters from the Aleutian Is. and the s. Alaskan coast along the Pacific coast from w. Canada (British Columbia) and the United States to s. California and nw. Mexico (n. Baja) and along the Atlantic coast from se. Canada (Nova Scotia) to the se. United States (Florida) and w. along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to se. Texas.
