Quebec s. to Anticosti Is. and Newfoundland (Bell Is. off n. coast and Miquelon Is. off s. coast), Greenland, Iceland (Lake Myvatin, deltas of Jokulsa a Dal and Jokulsa a Fljotsdal at Utherad) and from n. Europe across the n. Palearctic from n. Ireland, n. Scotland, Shetland Is., Orkney Is., Hebrides Is., Faroe Is., Spitsbergen (Svalbard), Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya, Kolguyev, Vaygach, New Siberian and Wrangel Is. to s. Norway, s. Sweden, Finland, n. Russia and n. Siberia to the Chukotski Peninsula, Kamchatka, Commander Is. s. to n. Lake Baikal, Amurland, Sakhalin Is. and Kuril Is.
Winters: in North America along the Pacific coast from the Aleutians, s. Alaska, w. Canada (British Columbia), w. United States (Washington, Oregon, California) to nw. Mexico (n. Baja), the Great Lakes and along the Atlantic coast from se. Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia) and the e. United States s. to the w. coast of Florida. In Europe along the coasts of Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, n. Germany, Denmark, s. Sweden in the w. Baltic and North Seas and n. Atlantic n. to nc. Norway. Inland, it winters in Switzerland (Lake Geneva, Bodensee) and Hungary (Danube River). S. France (Mediterranean Sea), ne. Italy (Po Delta), Yugoslavia and Albania along the n. and w. Adriatic coast, e. Greece (Sea Marmara), n. Turkey, e. Bulgaria, e. Romania and s. Russia along the Black Sea coast, c. Caspian Sea coast and the Pacific coasts of the Kamchatka Peninsula, Kuril Is., s. Sakhalin Is., Japan, Korea, Taiwan, e. China s. to the vicinity of Hainan Is.
