S. Europe e. to the Middle East and Africa s. of the Sahara;
Highly fragmented distribution;
Portugal and Spain, s. France, cw. Italy and Sardinia, then from Morocco and Algeria to Tunisia. Turkey and Cyprus e. through n. Iraq to sw. Iran s. to n. Egypt and the Near East. Senegambia, s. Mali, s. Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, s. Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, s. Chad, c. and s. Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Zaire, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa (Transvaal, Natal, w. Cape Province). Definitely known to breed in n. savanna areas, lowlands of w. and e. Africa s. to 27°S in w. South Africa.
