Range

Se. Australia; Tasmania; Tasman Sea; New Zealand (South Island) and adjacent Is.;
Breeds on the w. coast of South Island in s. Westland from n. of Haast s. of Waitangi-toana River, Jackson Bay, s. through Fiordland and Southland e. to the Blue Cliffs and perhaps in s. Otago, w. coast of Stewart Is., Codfish Is. and Solander Is. Colonies: South Island at Monroe Beach, Whakapohai, Murphy Beach, Knight's Point, Open Bay Is. off Haast, Jackson Head, Cascade Point, Big Bay at Awarua Point, Martin's Bay, Yates Point, Milford Sound including Anita Bay and Harrison Cove, Sutherland Sound, Bligh Sound, George Sound, Caswell Sound, Doubtful Sound including Secretary, Seymour and Rolla Is., Bradshaw Sound, Breaksea Sound, Breaksea Is., Resolution Is., Dusky Sound, Supper Cove, Chalky Inlet, Preservation Inlet including Coal and Weka Is., Puysegur Point, Gates Boat Harbor, Green Islets, Big River and the coast s. of Lake Hakapoua and on Big Solander Is. and Stewart Is. offshore is. s. to Poutama Is. including Christmas Village Bay, Rugged Is., Codfish Is., Ernest Is. (Masons Bay), Stage Is., Tupari Bay, Solomon, Pukeweka, Big South Cape, Tamaitemioka Is., Port Pegasus Is., Ernest Is. s. of Port Pegasus.
Disperses mainly w. to the Tasman Sea and Bass Strait, se. Australia (sw. Victoria and ex. se. South Australia) and Tasmania s. to Snares, Auckland and Campbell Is. and occasionally n. to North Island (s. from Bay of Islands in the e. and Auckland in the w.). Recorded as far away as the Falkland Is.
