Range

S. Australia and New Zealand;
(1) Breeds from Western Australia (Swan River near Perth and Carnac Is. near Freemantle, from Albany to Esperance, the Recherche Archipelago and Eyre) e. along the coast of South Australia (Nullarbor Cliffs, Cape Catastrophe, from Spencer Gulf to the Gulf of St. Vincent, Kangaroo Is. and Encounter Bay from Victor Harbor to Port MacDonnell) and Victoria (Phillip Is., Lady Julia Percy Is., Summerland Peninsula, Wilson's Promontory, Wattle, McHugh, Gabo and Tullaberga Is. and the Skerries) to New South Wales (Brush, Berowa, Grasshopper, Wasp, Tollgate, Montagu, Cabbage Tree and Boondelbah Is. n. to Port Stephens and New Castle) and on the Bass Strait Is. including King and St. Helens Is., Tasmania (even in the Hobart waterfront). It wanders n. to ex. se. Queensland (Moreton Bay).
(2) N. North Island, New Zealand, n. of about 40° S. from Cape Egmont, Taranaki n. around the North Cape to the Coromandel Peninsula, Gisborne and Hawke Bay.
(3) S. North Island in the South Taranaki Bight and n. South Island, New Zealand from Nelson, Punakaiki through the Cook Strait to the Marlborough Sound, Kaikoura and Motunau Is. off n. Canterbury.
(4) Ce. coast of South Island, New Zealand from Motunau Is. near Scargill off n. Canterbury s. along the Banks Peninsula to Lyttleton Harbor.
(5) W. and se. coast of South Island, New Zealand from Greymouth s. between Doubtful Sound and Puysegur Point, near Bluff and Owaka, Dunedin (the Otago Peninsula) and Hakatere (Canterbury Bight) and Stewart Is.
(6) Chatham Is. (se. Main and Big Mangere Is.).
