Range

E. and s. North America, Central America and n. South America;
(1) United States from s. California near San Diego and the Salton Sea and Massachusetts to Gulf of Mexico coast (s. Florida) s. to s. Mexico (Sonora, Oaxaca, Tabasco and possibly the Yucatan Peninsula).
(2) N. and e. South America along the Pacific coasts of Colombia and w. Ecuador (Gulf of Guayaquil) and along the Atlantic coasts of Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, Guiana and ne. Brazil s. to the mouth of the Amazon and including large rivers such as the Orinoco and Amazon s. in e. Ecuador, e. Peru, Bolivia and nw. Argentina.
Disperses to the coasts of Ecuador and Peru to s. Chile and from Panama to Trinidad to nc. Brazil.
(3) Large rivers in e. and s. South America from e. Brazil (Bahia) w. to Maranhao and e. Mato Grosso, e. Paraguay, Uruguay and ne. Argentina s. to Bahia Blanca.
