S. North America, West Indies, Central America, n. and se. South America. W. Africa;
Fragmented distribution;
(1) S. United States s. from s. California and New Jersey to Florida and w. to Texas, Mexico (wc. Baja, Sonora, Sinaloa, Tres Marias Is. and islands off the Yucatan Peninsula including Cayo Arcas and Alacran Reef), the West Indies, and is. off n. Venezuela from the Netherlands Antilles e. to Los Roques, Trinidad, Guiana, the Galapagos Is., Peru , Brazil (e. Bahia), Uruguay and n. Argentina.
(2) Islands off the coasts of w. Africa (Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia).
