Range

Tropical South America;
(1) N. and e. South America e. of the Andes from e. Colombia (Cauca, Boyaca) and Venezuela (Margarita Is.) to Trinidad (Caroni Swamp), Guyana, Surinam, Guiana s. through Amazonian Brazil (Bahia). Disjunct population in w. Ecuador.
(2) Sc. and s. South America in the Rio Paraguay and Rio Parana basins of n. and e. Bolivia, Paraguay and nc. Argentina (Santiago del Estero and very rarely Cordoba and Buenos Aires).
Visitor to Uruguay.
