North America, Europe and w. Asia;
(1) N. Europe from s. Scandinavia (s. Sweden) across nc. Russia to c. Siberia s. to Portugal (Pera Marsh, Lagoa dos Salgados, Algarve), s. Spain, Sardinia, n. Italy, Greece, w. Slovakia (Sennes), w. Turkey, Armenia, n. Caucasus to Caspian Sea, Aral Sea, Turkestan, Lake Balkhash, the Altai and w. China.
Winters in sc. Africa.
(2) Canada from sw. and ec. British Columbia, n. Alberta, sw. Mackenzie (Great Slave Lake), nw. Saskatchewan and c. Manitoba to Nova Scotia and s. locally in the United States to sc. California, n. Nevada, n. Utah and Colorado, Nebraska e. to sc. Illinois, Great Lakes, Ohio, nw. Pennsylvania and nw. New York. Disjunct populations in Kansas, Indiana and n. Vermont.
Winters s. in Central America and n. South America.
