(1) Europe from Denmark to c. Russia, s. Mongolia and e. China s. to nw. Africa in Senegambia, Mauritania and Tunisia, s. Spain, Sardinia, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Crimea, Iran, the Persian Gulf, across s. Russia in n. Caucasus, in the Volga-Ural steppes, Kirghiz steppes, Turkestan, se. Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India e. to West Bengal and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Winters from nw. and e. Africa to India.
(2) S. China, Indonesia and the Philippines.
(3) New Guinea, Australia (Western Australia (Carnarvon), Northern Territory, Queensland (Cairns Esplanade), New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia) and Tasmania.
(4) E. United States from New York s. to Florida and w. along the Gulf coast to Texas and the West Indies (Bahamas on Great Inagua and Harbour Is., Cuba, Puerto Rico and Virgin Is.).
(5) W. United States from s. California (Salton Sea) s. through w. Mexico along the coasts of Sonora and Sinaloa and probably islands in the Gulf of California s. to Ecuador.
(6) Coast and river valleys of Guiana (Cayenne), e. and se. Brazil (Bahia, Mexiana Is. in the mouth of the Amazon) to Uruguay and ne. Argentina s. to Buenos Aires. Birds breeding along the coasts of Ecuador and n. Peru may be (5), (6) or an undescribed race;
