Nc. United States regularly in the Great Lakes region and locally in c. Canada (ne. Manitoba, s. Ontario and s. Quebec), n. Wisconsin and n. Michigan. S. Scandinavia and Baltic coasts to nw. Russia s. locally to Germany, Denmark, Romania, and sc. Russia. W. Siberia from the Ural Mountains to the Ob River. E. Siberia e. from the Lena River basin, Lake Baikal, Transbaicalia, Yakutia, n. Amurland and e. Mongolia.
Winters along coast of se. Canada and ne. United States, Europe in the Mediterranean Basin, Black Sea and Caspian Sea, and coastal e. China.
