Fragmented distribution;
Mediterranean basin from s. and e. Spain, s. France, Sardinia, n. Italy, Greece, n. Black Sea, n. and e. Caspian Sea, n. Kazakhstan, Aral Sea and Lake Balkhash s. to Turkey, ne. Egypt and the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman e. to Pakistan (Sind) and scattered isolated populations in nw. Africa (sw. Morocco, Mauritania, Senegambia), Kazakhstan and Afghanistan.
Winters in the Canary Is., Mediterranean basin, Black Sea, Red Sea s. to East Africa and along coasts in vicinity of breeding regions.
