Range

Palearctic region;
Isolated populations occur at the e. and w. boundaries of the main Palearctic range;
S. Greenland, Iceland, Faeroe Is., c. Scandinavia across n. Russia and n. Siberia e. to the Kolyma River s. locally through Europe to Spain, n. Italy, Sardinia and Sicily, Turkey and Armenia to nw. Iran, n. Aral Sea, Altai and s. Siberia and Mongolia to Amurland, Ussuriland and Kamchatka, Sakhalin Is. and ne. China (Manchuria, Heilongjiang). A marginal population occurs in e. Canada (Newfoundland, s. Quebec on the Madeleine Is.) and ne. United States (Massachusetts on Monomoy Is.).
Winters in s. Europe s. to c. Africa, Middle East, India, se. and e. Asia, Philippines and Palau. Occurs regularly along the e. coasts of Canada and the ne. United States from the Great Lakes s. as far as Florida.
