Circmupolar in the Holarctic;
Breeds in w. and n. Alaska in the Aleutians, Alaskan Peninsula, Kodiak Is., n. Canada, Banks Is., s. Melville Is., Cornwallis Is., s. Ellesmere Is. and Baffin Is. s. in nw. Mackenzie, s. Keewatin, ne. Manitoba, Southampton Is., n. Ontario on Cape Henrietta Maria, n. Quebec and n. Labrador, Greenland, Iceland (Utherad), Faeroe Is., n. British Isles, Jan Mayen, Spitsbergen, Bear Is., Franz Josef Land, and n. Europe in n. Scandinavia e. across n. Russia, Novaya Zemlya to Siberia on the Chokotski Peninsula s. to Commander Is., Kamchatka and the Sea of Okhotsk.
Disperses as far s. as Brazil (Bahia) and Tierra del Fuego, South Africa, Australia (sw. Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales (Wollongong) and Queensland) and New Zealand.
