N. Scandinavia. N. Russia (s. Novaya Zemlya), nw. and nc. Siberia to New Siberian Is. and the Yana River delta.
Winters in the Mediterranean basin s. to South Africa (Lake St. Lucia, n. Zululand), Arabian Peninsula, Arabian Gulf coasts, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Burma, Australia (s. Western Australia, ex. n. Northern Territory, se. New South Wales, s. Victoria, se. South Australia) and Tasmania. Small numbers winter in se. England and Madagascar.
