Range

C. to ne. Asia;
Four or five populations;
(1) C. Asia in Turkestan, Kirghiz steppes, w. Tien Shan, Pamirs and Karakoram to w. Kunlun Shan.
Winters in s. and e. Africa to w. India.
(2) Himalayas in n. India (Kashmir), Sikkim and s. Tibet.
Winters in India, Malaysia and Sumatra.
(3) E. Tibet n. in w. China (w. and s. Sinkiang, w. Kansu, Tsinghai and w. Szechwan) to s. Mongolia.
Winters from Thailand to the Greater Sundas.
(4) E. Siberia inland in the Stanovoy Mountains and Verkhoyansk Mountains to the Soviet Far East.
Winters from Taiwan to Australia.
(5) Kolymskiy, Pyagina Peninsula, Kamchatka, n. Kiril Is. and Commander Is. (Bering Is.). W. Alaska in w. Aleutians and occasionally from the Seward Peninsula to the Brooks Range.
Winters in s. Japan, s. Ryukyu Is. and Taiwan to Australia (coastal Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria (Swan Island), se. South Australia) and Tasmania.
