Worldwide distribution;
N. Nearctic from n. Alaska w. to Point Barrow s. to w. Alaska at Hooper Bay and Nelson Is., and in n. Canada at nw. and nc. Mackenzie Is., Banks Is., s. Melville Is., Bathurst Is., Devon Is., Bylot Is., and w. and s. Baffin Is. s. to Yukon River, s. Victoria Is., n. Keewatin and Southampton Is. and Coasts Is., and n. Palearctic from nc. Russia from the Kanin Peninsula e. through n. Siberia (Kolguyev, s. Novaya Zemlya, New Siberian Is. and Wrangel Is. to Chokotski Peninsula and Anadyrland.
Winters throughout temperate and tropical regions of the world including coastal Europe (Wadden Sea), North America, South America (Brazil, e. Bahia), Japan (Chiba, Yatsu Higata Nature Observation Center). Australia (w. Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland (Cairns Esplanade), New South Wales, Victoria, se. South Australia, Tasmania, and Hawaiian Islands.

Summer: w. and n. ALK, ne. MAC, nw. and ne. KEE including arctic islands to sw. Baffin Is.;
Spring migration is up the Mississippi Valley. In the past, large gatherings have staged at Cheyenne Bottoms (nc. TEX, and sc. Kan);
Winter: along the Pacific coasts of ex. sw. BCO and Vancouver Is., WAS, ORG, and CAL inland to the Central Valley and Salton Sea. Along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from ex. s. NSC, se. MAS (Cape Cod, Chatham, Barnstable County), RID, CNT, se. NYK (Long Island), NJY, DEL, MYD, VIR, NCA, SCA, GEO, FLA (Fort DeSoto County Park, Pinellas County), ALA, MIS, LOU, and TEX.
