Range

Lord Howe Is.;
Restricted range;
Summits of Mt. Gower and Mt. Lidgbird. The Gilbert Rail was originally thought to have been collect on Apaiang Atoll in the Gilbert Is. Since this island has no suitable forested habitat, it was subsequently thought probably to have come from Ebon Is. in the sw. Marshall Is. However, neither location may be correct, and the specimen may be a misslabeled individual from Lord Howe Is.
