New Zealand;
Very restricted range;
(1) North Island, New Zealand.
(2) Ex. sw. South Island, New Zealand (relict populations survive in a few valleys w. of Lake Te Anau in the Murchison Mountains and the Stuart Mountains).
Introduced to Tiritiri Matangi Is., Kapiti Is., Mana Is. and Maud Is.
