W. Palearctic to c. Asia and n. Oriental regions. E. Africa to South Africa and Madagascar;
Fragmented distribution;
(1) Europe from the British Isles and s. Scandinavia across Russia to w. Asia in sw. Siberia s. to w. North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) and e. Africa (n. Kenya near Lake Turkana, Huri Hills and Maralal), Mediterranean region, Turkey, Near East to sw. Arabia, w. and n. Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, ec. India, possibly to Bangladesh, w. China and Mongolia.
(2) Azores and Madeira in the Canary Is.
(3) Cape Verde Is.
(4) Ethiopia, ex. se. Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda to ce. Zaire, Kenya (c. Kenyan highlands, West Usambara Mts), Tanzania, Angola, Zambia and Malawi to e. Zimbabwe and w. Mozambique.
(5) Sw. Namibia, South Africa, Comoro Is., Mauritius and Madagascar.
Introduced to Mauritius and Reunion.
