Temperate North America;
Highly fragmented distribution and resident throughout its range;
(1) Se. Canada (s. Ontario and probably s. Quebec) and e. United States w. to se. Montana and c. North Dakota, e. South Dakota, e. Nebraska, e. Kansas, e. Oklahoma and e. Texas and e. to n. Iowa, s. and e. Wisconsin, c. Michigan, e. Kentucky, c. Pennsylvania, n. New York and c. New England s. to n. Florida and Gulf coast.
(2) Peninsular Florida.
(3) C. United States from ne. Colorado, w. Kansas, w. Oklahoma and c. Texas s. to c. Mexico (Guerrero, Veracruz).
Introduced in Hawaii (Island of Hawaii, Niihau, Lanai, and Maui), California, Oregon, and Washington.
(4) Ex. sw. Canada (sw. British Columbia) through w. United States w. from e. Montana, South Dakota, se. Colorado, ex. w. Oklahoma, New Mexico and ex. w. Texas to nw. Mexico.
Introduced in Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
(5) Sw. United States (se. Arizona and sw. New Mexico) to Sierra Madre of nw. Mexico.
(6) Wc. to s. Mexico n. to Jalisco and Veracruz and s. to Guerrero. Formerly occurred s. to Oaxaca.
Reintroduced into many parts of the United States including areas where it did not formerly occur such as California.
Introduced to Australia on King Is. and Flinders Is. in the Bass Straits, New Zealand (North Island), the British Isles and Europe (successfully established in Germany (Taunus Forest n. of Frankfurt), but apparently unsuccessfully in Austria).
