Range

W. to e. and s. Africa. Indian subcontinent;
Two widely separated populations;
(1) Se. Iran e. through Pakistan, India from the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal s. to Kerala and the Tamil Nadu and e. to Assam and Bangladesh.
(2) Sw. Mauritania, Senegambia, s. Mali, s. Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, s. Chad, c. and s. Sudan, w. and c. Ethiopia, s. Somalia, Kenya (coastal lowlands s. of Mombasa, along the Tana River and Galana River upstream to Meru National Park and the Galana Ranch, vicinity of Likichokio, Lake Turkana and along the Northern Uaso River), Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and n. Tanzania.
Migrates to Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.
(3) S. of the Zambezi from Zimbabwe to s. Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, s. Angola and n. South Africa (n. Cape Province, Transvaal, and w. Orange Free State).
