Europe to e. and s. Asia; Africa s. of the Sahara;
Two main populations and many smaller isolated populations;
(1) Europe (n. British Isles, n. Scandinavia e. across nw. and c. Russia) and n. Africa through the Middle East e. to e. Siberia to the upper Kolyma River and the Soviet Far East.
Winters in s. Africa and India.
(2) Madiera and w. Canary Is.
(3) E. Canary Is. (Lanzarote).
(4) N. Cape Verde Is.
(5) Se. Cape Verde Is.
(6) Ne. Africa from Egypt to s. Yemen.
(7) Somalia, Socotra Is. and coastal ne. Kenya.
(8) W. and c. Africa from Mauritanis, Mali, Senegambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, Gabon and n. Angola to Zaire, Central African Republic, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya (Rift Valley and adjacent highlands) and s. Tanzania.
(9) C. Angola and s. Zaire, Zambia and Malawi to s. Tanzania, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa (Cape Province).
(10) Tibet e. through n. (Himalayas), n. Burma and n. Indochina(?), s. and c. China to Korea and Japan (Honshu and probably Hokkaido). Pakistan?
Winters in coastal China, Korea, Japan s. to India, the Malaya Peninsula, Indochina and the Philippines.
(11) S. India (w. and e. Ghats) and Sri Lanka.
