Europe and ex. nw. Africa; Cape Verde Is.
Two populations;
(1) Europe from the s. British Isles, s. Sweden and the Baltic States to w. Ukraine s. in the Netherlands and e. Germany (Hessen in the Kellerwald) to the Canary Is., nw. Africa from n. Morocco formerly e. to Tunisia and w. Mediterranean region to Balearic Is., Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, s. Italy, Hungary, sw. Russia, nw. Black Sea region, w. Caucasus and ex. ne. Turkey
Reintroduction program underway in England and Scotland.
(2) Cape Verde Is. (Boavista Is.).
