Sw. Europe and nw. Africa to e. Europe and Asia Minor in the Caucasus Mountains s. to n. India and e. to c. Asia in Mongolia and Lake Baikal; S. Africa;
Two populations;
Portugal (Montados in the Baira Baixa region), Spain, Balearic Is., France and nw. Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) e. through s. Czechoslovakia, Romania, the Balkans, Greece, Turkey, s. Russia from the area of Moscow s. in the Ukraine to Transcaucasus, n. Iran, Transcaspia, Turkestan and n. Afghanistan to sw. Siberia from the Altai Mountains e. to Transbaicalia, w. Mongolia (Lake Baikal), w. China (w. Sinkiang), s. Tibet, n. Pakistan and nw. India. Recorded during the summer in Manchuria (Heilungkiang, Kirin and Liaoning). S. South Africa (Cape Province), Namibia and perhaps Botswana.
Migrants at Hortobagy National Park and Zemplen, Hungary and crossing into Africa at Gibraltar and Suez.
Winters throughout Africa to South Africa and on the Indian Subcontinent and Burma. S. African population winters n. into nw. Cape Province and Namibia.
