Fragmented distribution;
Finland, Latvia and Poland through nw. and c. Russia (Oka Nature Reserve), Belarus (Almany Important Bird Area), n. Ukraine, s. Ural Mountains, Hungary (Hortobagy National Park), Romania to Kazakhstan, w. and s. Siberia (upper Ob River and upper Yenisei River, Lake Baikal and Transbaicalia to s. w. Amurland and Ussuriland), Mongolia, w. and ne. China (w. Sinkiang, Manchuria, Heilungkiang, Kirin, Lianoning and possibly Hopeh) and possibly Sakhalin Is. Isolated populations in n. Iran, Pakistan (Baluchistan, Sind, Punjab) and nc. India from Ganges Plain e. through Nepal, Bihar, West Bengal to Bangladesh, Assam and Manipur.
Migrant through n. India (Ladakh).
Winters from s. Europe to the e. Mediterranean, ne. Israel (Hula Nature Reserve), Arabia, ne. and s. Africa in Kenya (Rift Valley Lakes), Uganda, Zambia and Middle East through n. Pakistan to s. and e. China (Mai Po Marshes and Long Valley, Hong Kong), Taiwan and Indochina.
Formerly bred in Finland, Romania and Israel.
