Range
W. and c. North America; Alaska; Ex. nw. Canada;
One main population and several small isolated populations;
Ec. Alaska. Nw. Canada (Yukon and Mackenzie). Sw. and c. Canada (c. Alberta, c. Saskatchewan, c. Manitoba) and w. United States e. to w. and s. Minnesota, w. Illinois, w. Missouri, c. Arkansas, c. and s. Texas, s. to s. California and nc. Mexico (Sonora, Durango, Chihuahua). Formerly to the Baja.
Winters mostly in South America, especially in n. Argentina (La Pampa, Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Santa Fe), s. Brazil and Paraguay. A few bird winter over in the sw. and s. United States (California, Texas and Florida where it winters regularly).
