Range
Andes of c. to s. South America; Falkland Is.;
Two populations;
(1) High Andes of Peru (Huanuco, Ancash, Amazonas and Lake Junin) and c. and s. Bolivia s. to 35°S in n. Chile (Lontue) and 38°S in nw. Argentina. The two races intergrade in the Andes of Talca, n. Chile.
(2) Highlands of Chile s. in the Andes from Talca, Laguna del Maula and generally s. from Aisen, then in the Andes of Argentina from s. from Mendoza and Neuquen to (Patagonia) Chubut, Santa Cruz to Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn and the Falkland Is. Its breeding range becomes coastal s. of 45°S in Chile and 42°S in Argentina.
