Two main populations;
(1) Palearctic (Europe from Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, England, Faroe Is., Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia to Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Denmark, Germany, Netherland, Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Coastal Italy, Corsica, Sardinia, Yugoslavia, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and locally in North Africa from Morocco and ex. ne. Algeria e. to Tunisia, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and s. during the nonbreeding season in the Nile Valley, Egypt to Ethiopia, the Sudan, Kenya (Lake Naivasha), Socotra Is. and e. to n. Iran, n. Afghanistan, Pakistan, n. India (Kashmir, s. to ca. 19°N in Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, n. Maharashtra and Poona, and e. to Assam), Nepal, Bangladesh, Mongolia (Mongol Altai), n. China (breeds n. of 40°N from w. Sinkiang to Heilunkiang and winters s. of 40°N s. to Kwangsi, se. Tibet, Szechwan, s. Tsinghai, se. Kansu and Kwangtung), Taiwan, Borneo, n. Japan (Hokkaido), Sakhalin Is., Kuril Is. Nearctic in Alaska (Pribilof Is. and Aleutian Is.), Canada from the n. Yukon, nw. and s. Mackenzie, s. Keewatin and ne. Manitoba, n. Ontario, s. Quebec and United States breeding on the n. prairies of the Great Plains in s. California, s. Great Basin, s. New Mexico then from Oklahoma e. through the Ohio River Valley to Virginia, and locally s. to the Gulf Coast and Florida.
Winters s. to Sonora, n. Sinaloa, c. Chihuahua, n. Durango, ne. Coahuila, n. Nuevo Leon and n. Tamualipas in Mexico and in the West Indies (Cuba, Bahamas). Introduced to se. Australia during the 1860's and presently occurs mainly in city parks and gardens in se. Queensland, ex. ne. and s. New South Wales, Victoria, e. South Australia and locally around Perth in Western Australia), Tasmania and New Zealand (first introduced in 1867 and became establish ca. 1930), Lord Howe (1963), Norfolk (Sept. 1971), Antipodes, Macquarie (Aug. 1949), Snares, Auckland, Campbell and Kerguelen Is., as well as to Hawaii (Kauai and Oahu) and the Kerguelen Is.
(2) Sw. Greenland.
(3) Ex. s. United States in se. Arizona and in the the Rio Grande Valley from n. New Mexico locally s. to El Paso, but rarely as far s. as the Big Bend, and perhaps the Pecos River Valley of w. Texas. Very local in sw. New Mexico and se. Arizona s. locally in the highlands to c. Mexico (900 and 2500m) s. from Chihuahua and Durango and in the central volcanic belt e. to w. Tamualipas, se. San Luis Potosi and s. to Puebla in the c. highlands and Lake Atotonilco, Lake Chapala and Rio Lerma Delta on the Caribbean slope, Jalisco, Michoacan, Mexico, Distrito Federal, Tlaxacala, and Morelos.
Winters in the Palearctic from s. Sweden s. to n. Africa (Libya, Tunisia, Egypt (Nile Delta), Israel, Iraq, Iran, Oman, Pakistan, n. India, Bangladesh and Burma and in the Nearctic s. of Mexican border. Marianas Duck formerly occurred on Guam, Saipan and Tinian Is. in the Marianas Is. It may have wandered to other nearby is. (Rota Is.). The only remaining habitat suitable for its survival is Lake Susupe on Saipan and the Hagoi Marsh on Tinian.
