Breeds from c. Alaska to Canada (c. Yukon, nw. and c. Mackenzie, s. Keewatin and ne. Manitoba e. to New Brunswick and Newfoundland) s. in the United States to ne. California, n. Nevada, n. Utah, n. New Mexico, c. Colorado and from South Dakota e. to New England) and the West Indies. Possibly breeds in ex. ne. Siberia and rarely in Iceland.
Winters mostly along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America and in Bermuda, throughout the West Indies, Mexico, Belize(?), w. Guatemala, El Salvador(?), w. Honduras, w. Nicaragua, w. Costa Rica (Tempisque Basin, Guanacaste), Panama (Bocas del Toro, Chiriqui, Canal Zone, La Jagua), Colombia (Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta, lower Magdalena Valley, Cauca Valley, e. Andes from s. Boyaca to Sabana de Bogota and Ubate to 2000m), nw. Venezuela, Netherland Antilles (Aruba), Tobago, Trinidad. Also reported to winter in the Hawaiian Is. and Japan (Honshu and Kyushu).
