Breeds from Iceland to n. Scotland and occasionally and locally in England, ne. Germany, s. Sweden and n. Poland, then continuously in Norway, n. Sweden, Finland, n. Russia and n. Siberia s. of the s. half of tundra, the Transcaucasus (isolated population) and s. to n. Kazakhstan, ex. nw. and ne. China (w. Sinkiang and n. Manchuria), nw. Mongolia (Orog Nor and Achitu Nor) to the Kamchatka Peninsula and Sakhalin Is.
Winters mostly along seacoasts of sw. Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, s. Sweden, nw. Poland, s. North Sea coasts and w. entrances to the Baltic Sea, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy (Po Valley), Corsica, Sardinia, n. Austria, e. Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, Black Sea coasts of Bulgaria, Romania, se. Russia (Sea of Azov), Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel (Zohar Reservoir), Jordan, Iraq and Iran (s. Caspian Sea), Egypt (Nile River Valley) s. to the c. and e. Sudan (Sudd), Ethiopia, Somalia, ex. ne. Zaire, Uganda, c. Kenya (Rfit Valley lakes) and n. Tanzania and in n. and w. Africa along the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya s. to coastal Senegal and in a narrow band across w. Africa from s. Mauritania, n. Guinea, c. Mali (Niger River Basin), Upper Volta, n. Benin, s. Niger, n. Nigeria to Lake Chad and ex. n. Cameroon. Migrates through China and winters from ca. 36°N s. in s. China to Kwangtung, Szechwan, se. Tibet, Yunnan, Kwangsi, Hong Kong, Hainan, Taiwan, Korea and Japan (Honshu, Kyushu) s. to Afghanistan, Pakistan (Sind, Indus Delta, Salt Range Lakes, Kushdil Khan Lake in Baluchistan), Nepal, n. India (Kashmir, w. Bengal, Orissa on Lake Chilka, Assam, Manipur), Bangladesh, Burma, Malaya, c. Thailand, Cambodia, n. Laos, c. s. Vietnam and the n. Philippines. Occasionally winters in North America from Alaska to California and nw. Mexico (n. Baja and s. to Jalisco), as well as on Pacific is. including the Hawaiian Is., Palau, Marianas, Yap, Truk, Marshall and Line Is. (Palmyra Is.).
