Range

Cental America, n. to se. South America;
Coastal slopes of Mexico in the w. from Sinaloa to Chiapas and in the e. from Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon to the Yucatan Peninsula (Cozumel Is.), Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica (lower Tempisque Basin in Pale Verde National Park), e. Panama (Tocumen and Darien), e. Colombia (lower Atrato, Cauca and Magdalena Valleys, Narino), Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, Guiana, Brazil (Bahia, Chapada Diamantina and Parana, Rio Iguazu) e. of the Andes in e. Ecuador, e. Peru through e. Bolivia and Paraguay to n. Uruguay and n. Argentina (Tucuman, Santiago del Estero, Santa Fe). Occurs mainly e. of the Andes, but does occur w. of the Andes s. to sw. Ecuador. Occurs as a vagrant in sc. United States (along lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas), Trinidad (Nariva Swamp), coastal w. Peru (Lima) and Buenos Aires, Argentina.
A feral population occurs in s. Florida.
Introduced, but not established with certainty in Great Britain.
