Range

Holarctic;
(1) breeds in n. Europe in ne. Russia from Kolguyev Is. and the Yamal Peninsula to w. Siberia on the e. Taymyr Peninsula, Severnaya Zemlya and the Khatanga River. Nonbreeding birds summer on the Kola and Kanin Peninsulas, Kolguyev Is. and Novaya Zemlya. (1)X(3) may occur in the c. Taymyr Peninsula.
Winters along the coasts of nw. Europe from Ireland, se. Scotland, s. and e. England, w. and n. France, Belgium, the Netherlands, n. Germany and Denmark. Generally (1) winters in the e. part of Europe and (4) winters in the w. part.
(2) Breeds in arctic ne. Siberia from the Lena River Delta to the Anadyr Basin in Anadyrland and the Chukotski Peninsula.
Winters along the coasts of Korea, n. Japan and China s. to n. Shantung.
(3) Breeds in e. Siberia from the Anadyr River to the Bering Strait and from w. and n. Alaska s. to Kiskokwim Bay and e. to nc. Canada along the coast of Mackenzie to the Perry River Region on the border of Kitikmeat and ne. Keewatin and n. on Banks, Victoria (?), Prince Patrick and Melville Is. (3)X(4) may occur on Melville Is.
Migrates along the coast of British Columbia.
Winters in North America from British Columbia along the Pacific coast of the United States (Salton Sea) to nw. Mexico at least to Magdalena Bay, sw. Baja and the n. Gulf of California, c. Baja.
(4) Breeds from nc. Canada from Prince Patrick and Melville Is., the Perry River Region to the Adelaide Peninsula, Ellesmere, Prince of Wales, Southampton, Coats and w. Baffin Is. s. to Keewatin on the Adelaide Peninsula and in n. Greenland, Spitsbergen (Svalbard) and Franz Josef Land.
Migrates along the e. coast of Hudson and James Bays in Labrador and Quebec then overland from Ungava Bay to the lower St. Lawrence River, New Brunswick, Prince Edward and Magdalen Is. and Nova Scotia.
Winters along the Atlantic coast of the United States from Cape Cod s. to North Carolina. Spitsbergen (Svalbard) and Franz Josef Land birds migrate along the North Sea coast of Norway to Denmark and then to se. England (Northumberland). Some birds from n. Greenland migrate via Iceland to Ireland and nw. France (small numbers).

Summer: circumpolar in the holarctic: (3) Breeds from w. and n. ALK s. to Kuskokwim Bay and e. along the coast of n. YUK, NWT (MAC to the Perry River Region on the border of Kitikmeat and ne. KEE) and n. in FRA on Banks, Victoria (?), Prince Patrick and Melville Is. (3) and (4) intergrade in the Perry River region, on Prince Patrick Is. and perhaps on Melville Is.;
Winter: migrates along the coast of BCO to winter from BCO along the Pacific coast of WAS, ORG and CAL (Salton Sea) to nw. Mexico at least to Magdalena Bay and the n. Gulf of California; Summer: (4) Breeds from nc. Canada from Prince Patrick and Melville Is., the Perry River Region e. to the Adelaide Peninsula, Ellesmere, Prince of Wales, Southampton and w. Baffin Is. and in n. Greenland; Winter: migrates along the e. coast of Hudson and James Bays in LAB and QUE and overland from Ungava Bay to the lower St. Lawrence River, NBR, PEI, Magdalen Is., NSC and along the Atlantic coasts of MAE and NHP. Winters along the Atlantic coast from MAS (Cape Cod) to RID, CNT, NYK, NJY, DEL, MYD, VIR and NCA.
