Range

E. Greenland; Spitsbergen; S. Novaya Zemlya Is. and adjacent Vaygach Is., as well as, infrequently on the mainland of ex. ne Russia (Yugorski Peninsula);
Three main breeding populations;
The Greenland population migrates via Iceland to Ireland and w. Scotland (Hebrides). The Spitsbergen (Svalbard) population migrates along the coast of Norway, across the North Sea to Solway Firth and Islay Is. in sw. Scotland and nw. England. The Novaya Zemlya population migrates across the White Sea and Baltic Sea to Denmark, the Netherlands and ex. ne. Belgium. Formerly wintered in ex. sw. Denmark and nw. Germany. Occurs as a vagrant to ex. ne. North America primarily in Canada. Introduce in Great Britain, but not established.

Winter: NFD, NSC and NBR. Any birds s. of this range are likely to have escaped from captivity.
