Breeding populations have become established in many areas s. of the original range; The winter ranges of the following races overlap extensively;
(1) Gulf of Alaska coast of s. Alaska along the Prince William Sound and the Cook Inlet inland along the Copper River drainage e. to the Bering Glacier.
Winters in sw. Canada (Vancouver, British Columbia) and nw. United States (Oregon).
(2) S. Alaska s. from Glacier Bay along the coast of w. Canada (w. British Columbia, Queen Charlotte and Vancouver Is.).
Winters s. to n. California.
(3) Interior of c. Alaska e. across n. Canada (along the coast e. of Mackenzie) e. to Hudson Bay and s. to the Prairie Provinces.
Winters across the s. United States from the interior of California to the Gulf of Mexico coast and s. into ne. Mexico (Tamaulipas, Veracruz).
(4) Sw. Canada and w. United States (Great Basin).
Winters in the nw. United States.
(5) Ex. sc. Canada (Manitoba) and nc. United States (Great Plains) from Minnesota s. to Kansas, Missouri, sw. Ohio, Tennessee and Arkansas.
Introduced to New Zealand now on both North Island and South Island (derived from 50 birds released on South Island in 1905) with its stronghold on the e. slopes of the Southern Alps, Otago, Lake Ellesmere, Canterbury.
(6) C. and e. Canada s. and e. of Hudson Bay in e. Manitoba n. to Churchill, n. Ontario and n. Quebec.
Winters in the se. United States.
(7) E. Canada (e. Labrador Newfoundland, Anticosti and Magdalen Is., ne. United States.
Introduced to Sardinia and n. and w. Europe (ne. Ireland, Scotland, England in the 17th century, Norway (Oslo in 1936 and Trondelag in 1958), s. Sweden in 1929 and s. Finland in 1966). Swedish birds winter in the Netherlands, Denmark and n. Germany.
Winters along the Atlantic coast of the e. United States.
