Range

N. Holarctic;
Two populations;
(1) Breeds from ne. Siberia (Chukotski Peninsula), nw. Alaska (St. Lawrence, Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Is.) through n. Canada along the arctic coast and including s. Banks Is., s. Victoria Is., King William Is. to Southampton Is. in the mouth of Hudson Bay and s. Baffin Is. and s. in Hudson Bay to ne. Manitoba (Churchill) and Belcher Is.
Winters along coasts from the tip of the Alaskan Peninsula, sc. Alaska, sw. Canada (British Columbia), w. United States (nw. Washington, California in the Central Valley e. to the Great Salt Lake of Utah) and on the e. coast from Chesapeake Bay s. to Currituck Sound.
(2) Breeds in n. Russia from Pechora Bay, Kolguyev and Vaygach Is. and s. Novaya Zemlya e. to nc. Siberia (Lena River). Winters in Ireland, Scotland, England, France (Brittany, Loire Valley in the vicinity of Angers and the Camargue since mid 1960's), Netherlands, Denmark, n. Germany and n. Iran (s. Caspian Sea and Lake Rezaiyeh). (3) Breeds from nc. Siberia e. to the Chukotski Peninsula.
Winters in e. Siberia (Kamchatka Peninsula, Kuril Is.), Japan (Honshu), s. Korea, China (migrates through Mongolia, Orog Nor, Manchuria, nw. Kansu on Koko Nor and Tsinghai in Zaidam to the middle and lower Yangtze River and along the coast rarely to n. Kwangtung) and Taiwan.

Winter: along the Pacific coast from ALK (tip of Alaskan Peninsula, s. ALK), sw. Canada (s. BCO on the s. Thompson River near Chase), w. WAS, w. ORG, nw. CAL (Central Valley). Inland in the Great Basin from ne. CAL, w. NEV, w. MON, w. WYO, e. IDH, n. UTH (Great Salt Lake). Sw. ARZ (lower Colorado River). Se. NMX. Along the Atlantic coast from s. NJY, DEL, MYD and VIR (Chesapeake Bay), NCA (Swanquarter); Migrates through the Prairie Provences (ALB, SAS, MAN, w. ONT), NDK, SDK, MIN, WIS, n. ILL, n. IND, n. OHO, MIC (Great Lakes region), PEN to the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays.
