New Mexico, w. and s. Texas, sw. Louisiana, n. Florida s. to c. Mexico (Baja, Pacific slope, interior to c. volcanic belt and s. Morelos), Guatemala and El Salvador. West Indies s. to Grenada.
Winters near coasts and s. to Honduras (Toloa and Copen).
Introduced to w. Europe where it has bred in Iceland, Britain (mostly in lowlands of w. England, w. Midlands, but also Somerset, Gloucestershire, Hereford, Worcester, Warwick, Shropshire, Cheshire, Derby, Leicester), Ireland (Lough Neagh), France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Morocco.
