Range

Holarctic;
(1) Iceland, British Isles, Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Finland) e. from the Baltic Sea across n. and c. Russia and Siberia s. of Arctic Circle to Anadyrland and Kamchatka s. to c. Europe in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the former Yugoslavia, and locally in Greece and Romania, then in c. Russia, Turkestan, Uzbekistan, ne. Afghanistan, s. Siberia, ne. China (Manchuria, Heilungkiang, n. Sinkiang), Sakhalin Is. and n. Japan (Hokkaido).
Winters s. to the n. shore of the Mediterranean, s. Russia (Black Sea), Iran (Caspian Sea) and n. India, c. and e. China (Shantung and se. Kansu s. of the Yellow River), s. Korea and Japan s. to n. Kyushu and c. Honshu. Small numbers remain on ice-free waters in c. Asia.
(2) Ne. Afghanistan, Himalayas of n. India (Kashmir, Ladakh), Nepal (Tila Karnali, Sunkosi, Trisuli and the Narayani River w. of Tiger Tops) and Sikkim to se. Tibet, w. China (Qinghai-Xizang Plateau lakes in se. Kansu and Szechwan) and n. Mongolia (the Altai).
Winters s. on lowland rivers of India, n. Burma and s. China (s. Yunnan, Kwangsi and s. Kweichow). Possibly occasionally reaching Taiwan.
(3) C. and sc. Alaska (lower Kuskokwim River and Kodiak Is.), s. Yukon, s. Mackenzie and n. Saskatchewan across c. Canada to c. Labrador, Newfoundland and wc. Nova Scotia s. in the mountains to c. California, c. Nevada, c. Arizona, sw. and n. New Mexico then in the n. United States e. of the Rockies from ne. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan e. to New England (Maine and Connecticut) and occasionally s. to New Jersey.
Winters s. to s. United States (Great Lakes, Ohio River, California and Florida) and n. Mexico (n. Baja, Chihuahua, Coahuila and ex. n. Nuevo Leon).
