Se. Alaska across w. Canada in c. British Columbia n. to Queen Charlotte Is., sw. Alberta (mountains in Baniff area, Crow's Nest Pass, Waterton Lake) s. through the United States to sw. Oregon, c. Idaho, Montana, n. Colorado and locally in c. New Mexico. C. Saskatchewan, Manitoba n. to Churchill, s. Ontario (Lake Nipigon, Kenora area), s. Quebec (Montreal area), s. New Brunswick (St. Croix River and St. John's River) and much less frequently in s. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland s. in the Mississippi Valley to se. Kansas, c. Arkansas, ne. Texas, n. Louisiana through the n. Gulf states to c. Florida, Maine and Massachusetts.
Winters along the Pacific coast from sc. Alaska s. along coast of w. Canada to s. California and n. Mexico (Baja) and the nc. United States in the Great Plains, Mississippi Valley and along the Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida and locally along the Gulf coast, ne. Mexico and the West Indies.
