Range

Ne. Siberia; W. and n. Alaska;
Three populations;
Arctic coasts of ne. Siberia from the Yana River Delta e. to Mys Schmidta and the Chokotski Peninsula. Most of this population occurs between the Indigrika River delata e. to Chaun Bay. W. Alaska in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta National Wildlife Refuge, Baird Inlet and Kashunuk River. N. Alaska from Point Barrow e. to the Colville River and Canning River. Most easily seen from town of Deadhorse adjacent to Prudhoe Bay oil field during mid-June (June 10-15th is optimum time). Non-breeding birds may gather at New Siberian Is. and in the Chukchi Sea during summer.
Winters in openings in the pack ice in shallower waters of the Bering Sea 197km n. of St. Matthew Is. and Nunivak Is. and s. of St. Lawrence Is. where it is thought to gather in large flocks (23 flocks) at no more than six sites in holes that the birds melt in the pack ice. Also, winters off the s. Chokotski Peninsula. ___________________________________________________________________________________

Summer: N. and w. ALK; Winter: Mid-Bering Sea in breaks in the pack ice; Good sites for observing this species are: town of Deadhorse adjacent to Prudhoe Bay oil fields during middle two weeks of June (best between 10-15th of June), fly-bys can be seen at Barrow from late May through June, Gambell on St. Lawrence Is. from late May to early June and August into Fall;
