Holarctic; Circumpolar;
(1) Iceland (Lake Myvatin), Faroe Is., British Isles (Scotland (Firth of Forth) and England s. to the mouth of the Thames), w. Europe Scandinavia (Norway, Gotland, Sweden, Finland), Estonia e. across n. Russia, Siberia to the Lena River s. to c. Europe, w. Mediterranean and Turkey.
Winters s. to w. and s. Europe along the entire coast of North Africa (especially during severe winters), on Black Sea and Caspian Sea to c. Asia (n. India).
(2) Ne. Siberia e. from the Lena River to Kamchatka, the Kuril Is. Bering Sea Is. (Commander Is. and the Aleutians). W., c. and s. Alaska (Kotzebue Sound s. to the Aleutians and Alaskan Peninsula), then e. across the n. Yukon, nw, nc. and s. Mackenzie, s. Keewatin, n. Ontario, and the shores of Hudson Bay and James Bay, rarely s. to c. Canada and e. to the Atlantic coast.
Winters s. to China, Korea and Japan (Yellow Sea and East China Sea) then s. in the w. and e. United States along Pacific and Atlantic coasts and on the Great Lakes to n. Mexico (n. Baja). Occasionally to the West Indies. Regularly to Bermuda.

Winter: s. and se. ALK, w. BCO, w. WAS, w. ORG, w. CAL. S. ONT (Great Lakes on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario), e. QUE, NBR, PEI, NSC, s. NFD, MAE, se. NHP, MAS, RID, CON, se. NYK (Long Island), NJY, DEL, MYD, e. VIR, e. NCA, e. SCA, sc. GEO, n. FLA, s. ALA, s. MIS, s. LOU, and e. TEX.
