Range
S. South America;
C. Chile (Coquimbo s. in Santiago, s. O'Higgins (Curico), Valdivia and Rio Cruces Sanctuary), s. Paraguay, se. Brazil (s. Sao Paulo s.) s. through Uruguay (Banados del Este) and Argentina (Cordoba, Santa Fe, Entre Rio and Buenos Aires), where it breeds mainly in the La Plata area, to Tierra del Fuego (Cape Horn) and the Falkland Is. (mainly on East Falkland, Lafonia and adjacent is., and West Falkland on Fox Bay).
During the nonbreeding season, it gathers on lakes in w. Santa Cruz and Chubut, and disperses n. to n. Paraguay and occasionally to the Juan Fernandez and South Shetland Is.
