Fragmented distribution;
Introduced to nc. and ne. United States (the Great Lakes region, adjacent Canada and e. Long Island) with a third population developing in the vicinity of Regina, Saskatchewan. Introduced in w. Europe in the Faeroes Is., British Isles, s. Sweden, ex. s. Norway, ex. s. Finland, the Baltic States (lower Dvina River) and Russia (Dniester River), Poland, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, France (Loire and Seine Valleys), Switzerland, n. Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia, locally in Greece and Turkey, n. Black Sea coasts of Romania, Bulgaria and Russia e. to the Caspian Sea, Aral Sea, Kazakhistan along the Turgai, Sary-Su and Syr Darya Rivers, Lake Balkhash to se. Siberia, se. Lake Baikal, Transbaicalia and Ussuriland (upper Ussuri Valley), locally in China in Tsinghai (Zaidam swamps, Koko Nor), nw. Kansu along the lower Etsin Gol, Inner Mongolia, e. Heilungkiang (Manchuria, Lake Khanka). Winters in Egypt (Nile delta), e. Mediterranean (Israel), n. Iran, Korea and e. China along the Yellow Sea coast s. to the Yangtze delta. Introduced in South Africa (e. Cape Province), Western Australia (Northam Weir on the Avon River) and New Zealand (North Island and South Island chiefly on Lake Ellesmere and n. Canterbury).

Three populations.
Summer and winter: coastal se. MAS, RID, CNT, NYK, (e. Long Island), NJY, DEL, MYD, n. VIR. A second population has become established in the Great Lakes region centered on the Great Traverse Bay, MIC, and dispersing to the shores of Lake Michigan (the Upper Peninsula of MIC, e. WIS, ne. ILL, nw. IND and adjacent s. Canada, sc. ONT. A third population may be developing in the vicinity of Regina, SAS.
