Three populations;
E. Sudan, Ethiopia, nw. and sw. Somalia, Uganda (Lake Wamala), Kenya, ex. e. Zaire, Rwanda, Burundi (Ruzizi Marshes), Tanzania (Lake Kitangiri), Zambia (Kafue Flats), Malawi, Zimbabwe, se. Angola, n. Namibia w. to the Atlantic coast, n. and e. Botswana, Mozambique, c. and e. South Africa (Transvaal, Natal, Orange Free State, se. and s. Cape Province). Madagascar. Isolated population in Lake Chad area of Chad, n. Nigeria and n. Cameroon.
Ranges to s. Niger e. to Lake Chad, se. Sudan, Ethiopia and s. Somalia, then s. to s. Angola and ce. and ne. Zaire and possibly Madagascar.
