Nw. Africa, s. Europe to w. Asia and w. India; E. Africa; S. Africa;
Four relativly isolated populations;
1) Europe and North Africa and the Middle East.
2) Wc. Africal.
3) E. African Rift Valley.
4) S. Africa.
Breeds in s. Spain (Guadalquirvir, Andalucia, Alicante since 1973), s. France (Camargue), Morocco (Iriki, Puerto Cansado, Merdja Zerga), Tunisia (Shott Djerid region), Egypt (Bardawil Lagoon, E-Tina Lake, nw. Sinai), Mauritania (Banc d' Arguin), Turkey (Tuz Golu, Kurbaga Golu), Iran (Lake Urmia, Lake Rezaiyeh), ne. Caspian Sea (Azerbaijan), Kazakhstan (Lake Tengis), Kuwait (?), Afghanistan, Pakistan (Sind), w. India (Rann of Kutch), Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Sw. Mauritania, Senegambia and Gulf of Guinea islands. Uganda, Burundi, Kenya (Lake Elmeneita and Natron) and Tanzania (Lake Natron). Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa.
Disperses in the vicinity of breeding colonies Portugal (Pera Marsh, Lagoa dos Salgados, Algarve) and n. Algeria, n. Libya, Sardinia, s. Turkey, s. Caspian Sea, Cyprus, Syria (Lake Djabboul), Israel, Iraq, Iran (Fars), Arabian Gulf, Guinea, Sierra Leone, w. Liberia, coastal Congo, Gabon, Angola, ex. w. Zaire, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, s. and e. Zambia, Rift Valley lakes, c. Ethiopia, Djibouti, ex. nw. Somalia, Red Sea coasts of Sudan, Saudi Arabia, North Yemen, ex. w. South Yemen, e. end of Aldabra, s. and w. coast of Madagascar, Seychelles, Aldabra, Comores, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Cambodia (Tonle Sap, last record in 1935).
