Fragmented distribution;
(1) Solomon Is. (Rennell and Bellona Is.).
(2) Moluccas (Seram), Kai Is. (Kai Besar), w. Papuan Is. (Waigeo Is., Salawati), New Guinea (Bensbach area), Australia (small population in sw. Western Australia near Ludlow, n. Western Australia n. of the Kimberleys on the Fitzroy River, coastal Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales (Murray-Darling Basin), Victoria (Barren Box Swamp) and se. South Australia).
Rarely irrupts in Western Australia s. of the Kimberleys and inland, Tasmania (1957-58, 1975), New Zealand (1925, 1957-58, 1975-76).
