C. Europe and c. Asia;
Fragmented distribution;
(1) Europe in the Netherlands, s. Spain (Donana), Austria (Neusiedlersee), Hungary (Hortobagy National Park), Yugoslavia, Greece, w. Slovakia (Senne), Bulgaria (Poda Lagoon on the Black Sea coast), Romania, s. Russia, Turkey, se. Iraq, Iran, also claimed in Kenya (occasionally at Lake Turkana, less often at lakes Nakuru and Naivasha)
(2) N. Caspian Sea, Aral Sea, Kazakhstan to ex. se. Siberia (Tuva, Ussuriland), Mongolia, n. China to Manchuria, Korea and Japan s. to Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
(3) Is. off s. Mauritania, Banc d'Arguin, Senegambia and possibly Guinnea-Bissau.
(4) Red Sea coasts of Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, nw. Somalia, Socotra and Dahlak Is., Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Israel (s. Sinai, Tiran Is., Nabq), Kenya (occasionally at Lake Turkana, less often at lakes Nakuru and Naivasha).
Winters from s. Europe (s. Spain), Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt s. to Kenya and e. to se. China, Taiwan, w. and s. Burma, Borneo (Cape Sirik).
