Range

Cw. South America in c. Andes;
Highlands of sc. Peru from s. Ancash and Junin in the Titicaca basin s. to c. and s. Bolivia (La Paz, Oruro) and ex. n. Chile (Arica, Lake Parinacota, Lauca National Park and Tarapaca, Pisagua). Isolated populations near Cochabamba town in Bolivia and in ex. nw. Argentina (altiplano of Jujuy and Salta). Nonbreeding birds occur along the coast of s. Peru (May-September). In recent years small populations have become resident throughout the year along the coast and have bred at Pantanos de Villa, Peru.
