Range

E. Europe and w. Asia;
Europe from Yugoslavia (Vojvodina, Lake Skadar, Montenegro), Albania, n. Greece (Macedonia, Lake Mikra Prespa), Hungary (Hortobagy National Park), Bulgaria (Poda Lagoon on the Black Sea coast) and Romania (Danube River and Delta), e. and c. Turkey (Eregli Marshes), ne. Israel (Hula Nature Reserve), s. Russia (n. Black Sea, Crimea and the e. Sea of Azov, n. Caspian Sea), Aral Sea (lower Amudar Ya and Syrdar Ya Rivers), se. Uzbek, Tashkent region), n. and sw. Tadzhikistan, se. Iraq (Tigris and Euphrates Deltas) and n. Iran (s. Caspian Sea). Possibly breeds in Afghanistan. Formerly bred in Algeria. Occasional irruptions occur into c. Europe.
Major wintering populations occur in ne. Mediterranean Sea in the Aegean Sea, alone the Adriatic coast of the former Yugoslavia, Albania and w. Greece, in n. Yugoslavia and ex. s. Hungary, s. Romania (lower Danube River and Delta), Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, w. coast of Turkey and inland w. Turkey, Iraq (Euphrates Delta) and n. Iran (s. Caspian Sea coast).
